Hello everyone & happy Monday!
Today I want to talk identity in Christ. I want to share some verses with you guys to remind you who you are in Christ. I try and keep lists of verses like this in my phone and on my laptop at all times to remind myself who I am and to share with others that I see are smack dab in the middle of an identity crisis.
Here are 12 verses to help you remember your identity in Christ.
You are a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
You who are born again are brand new! You are not what you were before. You are a brand new creation! This is why figuring out who God says you are now is so important. The enemy will try to keep you deceived into believing that you are still who you were before. Knowing the Truth of who God says you now are will help you silence those lies when they come flying.
You are free from condemnation
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 ESV
Condemnation is what happens when we condemn something. A lot of time you see building that have been declared condemned. It means that they are no good. They are not fit to be used. They are worthless and must be torn down. The enemy comes and tells us that we are condemned. We messed up. We did that thing we promised God we wouldn't do anymore. Then we feel useless, ashamed and like a failure. These feeling aren't from God. He does not condemn us. Now he does discipline us and He won't allow us to be content in our disobedience. I heard recently that God tell us what we did was bad. He speaks to our actions and motivates change. The enemy attacks who we are. He goes for our identity. Learn to know the difference between God's loving correction and the enemy's condemnation.
You are a child of God
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:1-2 ESV
This means that God is our Father. That's huge because He is a good Father. A lot of times our earthly father fail to effectively reflect what a great Father God it. He is a Father that loves at all times. He literally is love. He loves His children and nothing scares Him. Your mistakes and mishaps don't scare Him. You past doesn't scare Him & neither does your future. He's got.
You are a friend of God
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. John 15:15 ESV
Jesus calls us His friends. He is fond of us. This gives us a look at this divine relationship we are taking part in. Jesus loves us. The Sunday school song was true. We are loved and we are considered friends.
You are chosen by God
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. John 15:16 ESV
I LOVE this verse. It's such a great reminder straight from the mouth of Jesus. We didn't choose Him. He chose us. Jesus chose us.
You are adopted by God.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!” Romans 8:14-15 ESV
You guys may not know that I am passionate about adoption. I believe the church is called to care for orphans because God cares for orphans. I think it is a privilege to adopt because we have been adopted. It's just such a big deal to decide to love someone with all of your heart, to give them your name and leave them an inheritance. God has adopted us. He has chosen to love us.
You are free
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 ESV
You are free. Born again Christian you are free. You may still be struggling through some not so good habits and your circumstances may not be ideal but you are free. That is Truth. He has made you free. Believe that until your whole life lines up with that Truth.
We are co-heirs with Christ
So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. Galatians 4:7 ESV
So not only are we God's children but we are also heirs. We have a heavenly inheritance coming.
You have access to God
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 ESV
Depending on how you view God this one may not seem as exciting to you as it is. You have to know that if you think God is angry and distant and just waiting to judge you and hand out divine smack-down style punishments, you have Him all wrong. He is a good Father. He wants good for you. He's not angry. He was angry. He was very angry and justly so. He poured all that anger out though. He put it on His only son to be exact and He did that to make a way for us to come to Him. He wants relationship with us. He wants us to come running to Him with all our hopes, dreams, fears, mistakes and doubts and we are promised we'll find mercy and help when we do.
You have been redeemed and forgiven
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV
God is a redeeming God. He can bring beauty and purpose out of all the time we've wasted, the mistakes that we've made and the crisis that have happened to us. You are redeemed and you are forgiven. When the enemy or people bring up old accusations against you, you remember that you are forgiven.
You have the mind of Christ
"For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV
The mind can be a total warren mast days. I recently put Philippians 4:8 on a banner to hang up on my living room wall to remind me that it matters what I think about. Sometimes this battle for my mind can feel overwhelming but that is when I come back to this Truth. I have been given the mind of Christ! The war is won.
You are never alone
“Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 ESV
You are never alone. God has gone to great measures to make a way for us to get to Him. He has promised us again and again in scripture that He will always be with us. David says in Psalms even if we wanted to get away we wouldn't be able to. We don't have to do life alone. God is with us always.
