27 Comforting Psalms: Psalms to Comfort the Grieving, Overwhelmed, & Hurting

The Psalms are packed full of the pure and honest heart cries of people who found themselves in all sorts of circumstances. I love the honesty with which they felt free to approach God.

The vast majority of Psalms came pouring out of a heart wrought with pain and turmoil. Most of them are laments. They are the songs of the people of God crying out to Him in the midst of loss, persecutions, obstacles, trials, and heartaches.

The Psalms are a beautiful haven when life is tough because they remind us of the power found in praise and worship regardless of our distresses. They point us to the comfort found in His presence, even in the midst of pain, when we remember how wonderfully faithful and kind He is.

Today we’re looking at 27 of my favorite Psalms to go to when you need to feel comforted and held. Included is an excerpt of each Psalm but I highly suggest you read each Psalm in its entirety.

I am also putting them in my favorite translation when I want to read and find comfort: The Passion Translation.

So whether you are mourning, or just stressed and overwhelmed, I pray these Psalms bring you great peace & I pray the God of peace would surround you with His presence as you look into His Word. I pray you find comfort and rest for your soul.

God, you are my righteousness, my champion defender. Answer me when I cry for help! Whenever I was in distress, you enlarged me. I’m being squeezed again—I need your kindness right away! Psalm 4:1,3 TPT

Now, because of you, Lord, I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for no matter what happens, I will live unafraid! Psalm 4:8 TPT

Psalm 5:11-12 TPT

Psalm 9

All who are oppressed may come to you as a shelter in the time of trouble, a perfect hiding place. May everyone who knows your mercy keep putting their trust in you, for they can count on you for help no matter what. O Lord, you will never, no never, neglect those who come to you. Psalm 9:9-10 TPT

He tracks down killers and avenges bloodshed, but he will never forget the ones forgotten by others, hearing every one of their cries for justice. So now, O Lord, don’t forget me. Have mercy on me. Psalm 18

You’re as real to me as bedrock beneath my feet, like a castle on a cliff, my forever firm fortress, my mountain of hiding, my pathway of escape, my tower of rescue where none can reach me. Psalm 23

Lord, even when your path takes me through the valley of deepest darkness, fear will never conquer me, for you already have! You remain close to me and lead me through it all the way. The Lord is my revelation-light to guide me along the way; b he’s the source of my salvation to defend me every day. I fear no one! I’ll never turn back and run from you, Lord; surround and protect me. Psalm 27:1 TPT

Here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with the Lord. Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope. Yes, keep on waiting—for he will never disappoint you! Psalm 27:14 TPT

Psalm 40

I waited and waited and waited some more, patiently, knowing God would come through for me. Then, at last, he bent down and listened to my cry. He stooped down to lift me out of danger from the desolate pit I was in, out of the muddy mess I had fallen into. Now he’s lifted me up into a firm, secure place and steadied me while I walk along his ascending path. Psalm 40:1-2 TPT

Psalm 43

So I say to my soul, “Don’t be discouraged. Don’t be disturbed. For I know my God will breakthrough for me.” Then I’ll have plenty of reasons to praise him all over again. Yes, living before his face is my saving grace! Psalm 43:11 TPT

Psalm 139

This is just too wonderful, deep, and incomprehensible! Your understanding of me brings me wonder and strength. Where could I go from your Spirit? Where could I run and hide from your face? If I go up to heaven, you’re there! If I go down to the realm of the dead, you’re there too! Psalm 139:6-8 TPT

I hope these comforting Psalms show you that it is okay to be honest and open with God about the circumstances around you. He promises that He is close by when you are hurting. He tells us your pain hurts Him too. He sees the storm raging and luckily He’s the only one I know that winds and waves obey.

Don’t let your circumstances and trials pull you from God. Instead, press into Him when life is difficult. He is our comforter.
