5 Things Loss Has Taught Me About God

It can be tough to imagine any good coming from painful losses. My husband and I have suffered two miscarriages and the pain and shock they bring. After having walked through both of those hard seasons, I would love to share what I learned about the Father.

I will start by saying when we lost our first baby in 2015 I blamed God. It was in that season I realized I wasn’t sure who He was or how He could be trusted. The next year was a healing journey for me, and the Father continued to pursue my heart and teach me about His nature and He response to loss.

When we lost our second baby in 2017, I clung to my Father as best as one can when facing that kind of pain. Mike and I both, declared we would not blame Him for this loss, and we tried our best to invite Him into our mourning as we knew this grieved His heart too.

We don’t understand it all. We don’t have everything figured out, but we have, from our losses, learned who He is and today I want to share.

I get it. Some seasons of life can be so tough to endure. It can be hard even to know what to say to God. That’s why we’re going to look at 5 prayers for hard times based on 5 powerful passages of scripture.

I am pretty open on this blog about the challenges I have faced. I went through a season where my marriage almost fell apart. My husband and I had several friendships end really badly. We lost two babies to miscarriage.

As I am writing this post, we are two month into a move we made across the country. We are now over 1000 miles from home and family with our three-month-old baby where we know no one.

Life is full of seasons of hard times. Today I want to share some verses and how I would turn these verses into prayers for strength in difficult times. You were created for a life of abundance and joy in the Father, but unfortunately, in this life we have troubles. I try my best to provide content that reminds you how loved you are and how valuable you are to the Father. I strive to provide encouragement to chase your dreams and to believe God for big and bold things. I want you to be kind to yourself and others because you are overwhelmed by how kind God is towards you.

But I also want you prepared and equipped for when life gets tough because life will get tough. Stormy seasons of life are inevitable. Jesus even warned us in John 16:33 that trouble will find us in this life. He didn't leave it there though. That warning is actually sandwiched between promises that He has already overcome and that He is with us.

There is a storm blowing in right now as I am writing this. The clouds have gone all dark and gray, and there’s a quietness in the air. Here is a random fact about me. I love storms!

Thunderstorms just quiet my soul and remind me of the power that our God possesses. Scripture tells us there this crazy lightning & thunderstorm display happening around His throne. I love that. Storms make me think of Heaven.

Now I know storms can quickly become scary. They can go from your average thunderstorm to something very destructive very quickly. These types of storms remind me of life. Life is full of ups and downs. There are moments where being joyful is so effortless it just pours from us. Then there are times where we find ourselves in a stormy season. Thankfully the Bible has a lot to say about storms.

How To Break Free From The Grip Of Shame

I was recently offered an upgrade on a flight I was taking when I went to check in. I was eligible to upgrade to first class for around how much it was going to cost me to check the two bags I needed to get home with me.

Being 7+ months pregnant the idea of a big plush comfy seat and extra drinks and snacks was very appealing. Plus it would cut my time in security down substantially which would be a blessing because standing for long periods of time these days is torture, so we did it!

This was my first time flying first class and I was pretty excited. However, once I got settled in my seat, people from the main cabin began to file in. It was then I heard that old familiar voice in the back of my mind. It whispered things like, “you are a phony,” “you shouldn’t be here,” and “people are going to notice that you don’t belong here.”

You probably know that voice as well. That is the voice of shame. Shame tells you everything you are not, and it loves to lie and embellish.
